FBOA Student Scholarship Fund

See our current scholarship award winners here!

At the Fall 2009 general meeting, it was decided to begin a scholarship fund for area athletes. This program, which will award two $500 scholarships each year, began in the Spring of 2010. The scholarships are non-gender specific, and the winners are voted on by the membership.

Some further details regarding the scholarships:

  • Each applicant must be a senior, have a 2.5 minimum GPA and be an athlete at one of our area schools (Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties).
  • Although school administrators and athletic directors will be informed about the program and encouraged to share the information with student-athletes, the students themselves will be responsible for submitting an application for consideration. The application will give the student-athlete an opportunity to share the reasons they feel they are deserving of one of the scholarships. Two letters of recommendation shall accompany the completed application.
  • Applicants do not need to be "star athletes," but individuals that best display sportsmanship, citizenship, dedication and determination.
  • The list of applicants will be narrowed to a list of finalists by the FBOA Scholarship Committee. These finalists will be presented to the full membership for the selection of the two award winners.
  • To be considered for the scholarship, the student-athlete cannot be related to anyone who has been an active FBOA member during the previous two years .

It was decided that the funding for this project would come from the Fruit Belt Officials Association treasury, with donations from members encouraged and accepted. It was recommended that officials try to donate at least one game fee, although any amount will be accepted.

We are pleased to announce that in addition to the option of making donations to the association treasurer directly, members can now donate online using the button below. This process is completely secure and only takes minutes to do! We are using the highly respected PayPal system for the processing of these donations. The best news is that you do not need a PayPal account to complete the process -- you can use any major credit card. The minimal processing fees will be taken out of the treasury -- your complete donation will go directly to our recipients!

Officiating is an avocation that at times puts us at odds with those in the stands. The FBOA has long made it a habit to give back to our area athletes, through our sportsmanship awards to area schools and their students. This program is one more way to show that officials are not the "enemy," but just people trying to provide the best student-athlete experience possible. Why not take the time today to donate to our scholarship fund?

Thanks in advance for your consideration!
